Why Your Garage Door Won’t Open: Common Causes and Repair Options

There are few things more frustrating than pressing your garage door remote on a busy morning and getting zero response. Whether you live in a new build in South Jordan or an established neighborhood in West Jordan, being stuck inside—or locked outside—of your garage disrupts your entire day. Fortunately, most opening failures boil down to a few easily diagnosable issues.

Misaligned or Blocked Photo-Eye Sensors

If your door starts to close but immediately reverses back upward—often accompanied by a blinking light on the overhead opener unit—the issue is almost certainly your safety sensors. Located near the floor on both sides of the track, these sensors shoot an invisible beam across the opening. If a trash can, a stray bicycle tire, or even heavy dust blocks the beam, the door will not shut. Wipe the sensor lenses clean with a microfiber cloth and gently realign them so they point directly at one another.

Power and Transmitter Issues

Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one. If the door won't budge at all, verify that the opener unit is actually plugged into the ceiling outlet and that a circuit breaker hasn't tripped. If the wall switch works but your remote doesn't, you likely just need to replace the transmitter batteries. Additionally, check your wall console; many models feature a "Lock" or "Vacation" switch that, when accidentally flipped, completely disables all remotes.

Snapped Cables and Broken Springs

If the opener motor runs but the door doesn't move, or if you hear a grinding noise as the motor struggles, you are likely dealing with a broken spring or a snapped lifting cable. Look up at the torsion spring above the door—if there is a visible split in the coil, the spring is dead. The door is now dead weight, and the opener cannot lift it alone.

Stripped Opener Gears

Inside the overhead opener casing is a plastic drive gear that turns the belt or chain. Over time, particularly if your door is unbalanced and heavy, the teeth on this gear can shear completely off. You will hear the motor humming perfectly, but the chain or belt simply will not move.

Electrical quirks can be handled with a quick battery swap, but snapped cables, stripped gears, and broken springs require professional intervention.
